More on Neuheisel

Columnist Frank Dascenzo has an interesting read on Rick Neuheisel in today's Herald-Sun, and he quotes the coach as saying that he's interested in the Duke job.

Also, this article from the NC State scout.com site has some informative background info on Neuheisel's infraction history, including more about the ineligible player that led to the forfeiture of 5 wins in the 1997 season at Colorado.

I spoke with Alleva over email in 2003 about Neuheisel-I believe this is the time when Franks had just been fired and Roof was on an interim basis. I was surprised Alleva actually responded.

I floated the idea of Neuheisel and Alleva responded 5 minutes later, verbatim: "Are you kidding me? He has had over 50 NCAA violations. Not our kind of guy." Given our exchange, I'd be very surprised if he ends up the new HC.

If Duke doesn't land RN I will give up my season tickets. This guy is going to land on his feet somewhere soon and he wants to come to DUKE. Incredible that he is not being offered the job, much less interviewed.

Neuheisel would only use Duke as a springboard to a job at a top 20 program. Like Johnson, he wants to compete for a championship, and he would bolt as soons as Duke won some conference games.

The big questions in my mine are 1) does Duke provide sufficient funding and flexibility for a head coach to hire high-quality assistant coaches (Root didn't seem to get this); 2) has Duke analyzed its past recruiting efforts to determine why it does not attract more 4star recruits (eg. is it losing African-American recruits? low-academic targets? athletes who want to play in the NFL?), and 3) will Alleva let the new coach pick nonconference opponents that are beatable instead of Alleva scheduling away games against name teams offering large financial guarantees, and 4) will Duke insert large buy-out clauses in the contracts of the head coach and senior assistant coaches to discourage Duke politicos from yanking their chain while they build the program?

I can't imagine an experienced head coach treating the Duke position as a destination job without seeing all of this in writing.

I have serious doubts Alleva has done his homework. He should have developed a long-range development plan himself a year or two ago--instead alums and the team have to convene a summit to get the ball rolling. Alleva also should have developed a list of potential replacement coaches and known which candidates where a good fit BEFORE he fired Roof. Finally, he is all over the map on his interviewees thus far--he says he wants an experienced successful offensive-minded coach, then invites two defensive-minded coaches in for interviews. He could not even convince Paul Johnson to tour factilities.

Contrast this with the Georgia Tech AD, Operating under very similar constraints, he interviewed 8 candidates and hired his head coach in 11 days.

Alleva continues to demonstrate-again- that he is not up to the task

Agree completely. It is astonishing to me that he still has the job as AD. Without Coach K's backing, he'd be selling cars in the Triangle. I have zero faith in him making the right choice here.

Part of the issue with the number of fewer interviews is that Duke put all of its eggs in the basket, so to speak, for Paul Johnson. When he spurned Duke, they were left a bit in the lurch.

Another reason that we've had trouble getting more interviews is because of Alleva's insistence on interviewing coaches with D-1 experience. Granted, I know that Broadway doesnt fit that bill, but in general it's harder to get a head coach (of course many of whom already have jobs) in for an interview than it is to get a young assistant in who is chomping at the bit for his first HC opportunity.

Still, the timetable is going a bit slow at this point, and I'm starting to become skeptical whether or not a hire is going to happen before Christmas.

i'm glad johnson withdrew. takes out the temptation for alleva to yet again choose the worst candidate

Now it opens the door for Alleva to bring Franks back into the picture.

Springboard = going to a bowl game. That's fine with me. It means the job's more attractive next time around. Duke needs a winning season or two.

It's time for Rod Broadway. I know that he's DII, but he's won everywhere he's been. He knows Duke, he knows the Triangle, and he will do everything he can to beat UNC every time we play those bastards.
